Jamaican crooner Protoje has recently introduced a remix album, “In Search Of Zion,” in collaboration with the producer collective Zion I Kings, released through In.Digg.Nation Collective / RCA Records, this project revitalizes Protoje’s acclaimed 2020 album, “In Search of Lost Time,” infusing a blend of traditional and modern roots reggae.
Zion I Kings, comprising David “Jah David” Goldfine, Laurent “Tippy I” Alfred, and Andrew “Moon” Bain, contributed their seasoned sound and expertise to produce a fresh, ambient, and soulful reinterpretation of the original tracks. The LP includes dub versions, providing listeners with a deeper exploration of the sonic landscapes crafted by the producers and serving as the concluding instalment in Protoje’s trilogy of time-themed albums.
The collaboration with Zion I Kings, known for their extensive catalogue and Grammy-nominated work, introduces a unique fusion of live roots reggae instrumentation to Protoje’s lyrics and songwriting. The remixes showcase the collective’s sonic signatures, while the dub versions highlight individual production approaches, merging Jamaican dub mixing tradition with contemporary techniques.
“In Search Of Zion” represents a musical journey and testament to resilience. Developed during the challenging 2020 lockdown, the album gained additional significance when core member Andrew “Drew Keys” Stoch died. Despite this tragedy, the team rallied together, channelling their grief into the project and creating a roots reggae healing journey that explores a diverse range of sound, colour, and emotion.
In parallel with his musical ventures, Protoje, accompanied by his band The Indiggnation, recently completed a successful European tour and is gearing up for the next edition of The Lost In Time Festival scheduled for February 24, 2024, in Kingston, Jamaica. Expanding his creative repertoire, Protoje is set to release his debut children’s book, “Here Comes The Morning,” in collaboration with The Bookboys and illustrator Jonathan Nelson. Inspired by Protoje’s song of the same name and dedicated to his daughter Yara, the book is slated for release on November 18, 2023, marking a poignant extension of Protoje’s artistic reach across various mediums and demonstrating his ability to connect with diverse audiences.
