Dancehall superstar Vybz Kartel’s much-anticipated Carnival Friday performance in Trinidad and Tobago has been postponed, adding another twist to an already controversial situation. Originally set for February 28, the One Caribbean Music Festival will now take place in May due to “unforeseen logistical challenges,” according to the event’s organizers. The announcement comes just months after Kartel’s confirmed booking sparked controversy, with critics questioning his presence during Trinidad’s soca-dominated season.
In a statement, festival organizers cited a packed Carnival schedule and venue availability issues as the primary reasons for the delay. “The high volume of back-to-back events at our chosen venue during Carnival week has significantly impacted the time needed to create the best possible festival experience,” they explained. The show was initially scheduled for the Queen’s Park Oval, but alternative venues like the Hasely Crawford Stadium were also unavailable. Ticket holders can still use their passes for the new date or request a refund at their original point of purchase.
Kartel, known for his media savviness, had already fueled speculation during his December visit to Trinidad, where he launched his STR8 VYBZ rum brand. While remaining tight-lipped about the performance at the time, the “Worl’ Boss” framed his presence as a move toward Caribbean unity. “This is a joint collaboration between Jamaica and Trinidad,” he stated. However, opposition remained strong, with soca artiste Kevon “Yankey Boy” Heath even launching a hunger strike in protest. The backlash highlighted ongoing tensions between dancehall and soca artists, especially during the crucial Carnival season, which generates millions in revenue for Trinidad’s entertainment sector.
Despite the postponement, Kartel’s influence on regional music remains undeniable. Following his release from prison in 2024, he quickly re-established himself as a dominant force, with his Carnival booking seen as a statement of his enduring relevance. Whether the extra time will ease tensions or further amplify debate remains to be seen, but one thing is certain—whenever Kartel takes the stage, the spotlight will follow.
