Dancehall heavyweight Popcaan continues to elevate his global appeal, as his 2020 hit single Twist & Turn has been certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). Featuring superstar collaborators Drake and PARTYNEXTDOOR, the track has now surpassed 500,000 units in sales and streaming equivalents in the United States, cementing Popcaan’s place among the genre’s elite. A standout from his Fixtape album, Twist & Turn was a chart darling during the pandemic, peaking at No. 47 on the Billboard Canadian Hot 100 and appearing on several U.S. charts, including No. 36 on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay and No. 26 on Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay.
This marks the second time the Unruly Boss has achieved gold certification. His first came in 2021 with Jamie XX’s I Know There’s Gonna Be (Good Times), which featured Popcaan alongside rapper Young Thug. “This milestone shows the power of dancehall music and the love of my fans worldwide,” Popcaan said in a recent statement celebrating the achievement.
The news arrives as Popcaan commemorates another career-defining moment: the 10th anniversary of his debut album Where We Come From. To mark the occasion, Mixpak Records has released a deluxe edition of the project, which includes two unreleased tracks, Beat the Struggle and Don’t Finesse Me, along with an acoustic version of the title track. Executive producer Dre Skull remarked, “This album was a cultural moment, and we’re excited to give fans a chance to re-experience it with new music and a fresh spatial audio mix.”
Originally released in 2014, Where We Come From made an indelible mark on the industry, peaking at No. 2 on the Billboard Reggae Albums chart. Its influence extended beyond the charts, with tracks like Too Bad even inspiring global hits such as Drake and Rihanna’s Too Good. Reflecting on the project’s impact, Popcaan said, “This deluxe version is for my Unruly family, who have supported this album for a decade. It’s a classic, and now it’s even better.”
With over a decade-long legacy in the making and new accolades to his name, Popcaan’s journey proves that dancehall continues to resonate with audiences worldwide.
