Grammy-winning reggae artiste Kabaka Pyramid is calling for a stronger business structure within reggae music, arguing that better management, organised touring and greater collaboration between established and emerging performers are essential for the genre to compete globally. Speaking with Chin of Soundchat Radio in an interview, Kabaka questioned the industry’s “every artiste for themselves” approach, pointing to international reggae-rock bands as examples of how structured touring arrangements can create opportunities and expand audiences.

Kabaka highlighted the importance of professional managers, booking agents and stronger relationships between artistes, promoters and venues. He explained that some American reggae-rock bands tour with multiple supporting acts, allowing younger performers to reach larger audiences while benefiting from established touring infrastructure. He believes Jamaican reggae could adopt a similar model instead of leaving artistes to shoulder the responsibility of building their careers independently.

The Grammy winner also stressed that established artistes must play a greater role in developing the next generation. Reflecting on his own experience touring with American reggae-rock band Rebelution, Kabaka said the tour remained his most financially rewarding despite missing approximately seven shows during a COVID-related quarantine. He cited the experience as an example of the opportunities available when touring is organised effectively and supporting acts are integrated into a broader business plan.

Meanwhile, Kabaka acknowledged the growing attention surrounding dancehall’s arena and stadium ambitions but argued that reggae should develop a touring strategy suited to its own audience and commercial strengths. Rather than treating stadium performances as the ultimate benchmark, he suggested that amphitheatres and other venues could offer valuable opportunities. He also believes that coordinated tours featuring established reggae performers could help the genre reach new audiences and strengthen its international presence.

Kabaka’s comments underline a wider challenge for reggae: translating its wealth of talent and cultural influence into a more sustainable commercial model. His message is that stronger business infrastructure, strategic partnerships and a commitment to supporting emerging performers could help create a more resilient future for the genre.
