Jahazeil Myrie, son of dancehall stalwart Buju Banton, took a transformative step last Sunday, choosing baptism at the Meadowbrook Church of Christ. The artiste, recognized for his uplifting and conscious lyrics, revealed that years of inner turmoil led him to this decision. His baptism follows a family trend toward Christianity, with his sister, model Abihail Myrie, making a similar spiritual commitment in November 2021.
Jahazeil’s declaration comes just days after the release of his single To My Rescue, featuring dancehall artiste Spragga Benz. The song forms part of his upcoming ten-track album and represents his dedication to his music, even with his newfound faith. His commitment to both his craft and his faith reflects his sister’s path two years prior, when she publicly embraced Christianity, sharing her own story of spiritual struggle and the “rough” journey toward faith.
Abihail, who faced personal challenges, including a highly publicized missing person report just before her baptism, shared her experience with a similar conviction. “I’ve fought, learned, faced public humiliation, cried, got back up, listened and trusted God,” she wrote on Instagram. “I am home… It was all worth it. I am better, stronger, much wiser and am able to proudly say that I am truly a child of God.” Jahazeil, who supported her decision then, has now embraced his own path to faith, uniting the siblings in their spiritual journeys despite the differing roles they play in Jamaica’s entertainment landscape.
As both continue to navigate their unique callings, Jahazeil and Abihail offer a new dimension to the legacy of Buju Banton. While their father has been a strong advocate of Rastafarian principles, his children’s decision to find strength and purpose in Christianity illustrates the diversity within the Myrie family and how faith continues to shape the next generation in Jamaican music and culture.
