High-profile Jamaican attorney Isat Buchanan, renowned for his pivotal role in securing the release of dancehall star Vybz Kartel, is making a bold leap into representational politics. The People’s National Party (PNP) recently announced Buchanan as their candidate for East Portland in the upcoming general election, signalling a shift in their strategy to reclaim a seat they held for 30 years. Buchanan, a celebrated and controversial figure, enters the political arena with a clear mission: to unseat the incumbent Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) Member of Parliament, Ann-Marie Vaz, who has held the constituency since 2019.
Buchanan’s candidacy is not without its challenges. His career has been marked by both high-profile victories and public setbacks, including a suspension by the General Legal Council, which is currently under appeal. However, his deep ties to the community, forged through years of advocacy, have positioned him as a serious contender. “It’s an honour to stand for the people of East Portland,” Buchanan declared. “Together, we will build a brighter future where every voice is heard and every dream is realised. I see you, I hear you, I am you. Impossible is nothing!”
The PNP is betting on Buchanan’s charisma and reputation for resilience to energise their base and challenge Vaz’s stronghold. Vaz, who narrowly won her seat in 2019 and solidified her position with a decisive victory in 2020, is expected to face fierce competition from Buchanan. Confident in his vision, Buchanan promises to focus on rehabilitation, elevation, and action, with key initiatives in education, healthcare, and economic development. With the general election constitutionally due next year, Buchanan is gearing up for what will undoubtedly be a heated contest in East Portland.
