Amid the intense scrutiny and vibrant discussions surrounding Jamaica’s local government elections, anticipation mounts as citizens eagerly await the outcome of a hotly contested campaign between the nation’s primary political adversaries. However, amidst the electoral fervour, a noticeable shift in sentiment towards the ruling Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) has begun to emerge, based on the preliminary results.

Renowned for her candid commentary on societal issues, outspoken entertainer and social activist Tanya Stephens emerged as a prominent voice on Wednesday evening. Taking to Instagram, the singer shared her perspective on the news reported by Nationwide that the Opposition People’s National Party (PNP) had clinched victory in the Kingston and St. Andrew Municipal Corporation (KSAMC), a pivotal and influential division within the country. In her post, she also challenged Prime Minister Andrew Holness, aka ‘Bro Gad,’ to expedite the calling of the impending general elections.

“A over @nationwide90fm it come from so who knows… but @andrewholnessjm call the general so you can wrong and strong bout that too nuh? Oonu believe now say ppl tired a oonu? Call the general if yuh a ‘gad.’ You shoulda shame fi sick so much labourite stomach. Let’s see if you have enough sense to even pretend humility. By the way St. Mary… thank you! @ramon_bighouse_henry big up yourself youth! Time come for something different,” Stephens expressed assertively.

Analyzing the electoral landscape, the current tally reveals a closely contested battle in the Kintyre Division of East Rural St. Andrew, ultimately secured by the PNP’s Vivienne Brown-Bond with a slender margin of 32 votes. This outcome yields a deadlock, with a split of 20-20, yet the PNP gains control owing to its victory in the popular vote within the capital city and its environs.

The triumph of the PNP in the KSAMC grants it unparalleled control as the most influential and coveted local government division in Jamaica. This victory underscores the strengthened political position of the Mark Golding-led PNP, who emerge from the local elections with enhanced clout compared to their pre-election standing. Transitioning from five municipalities to six, including the KSAMC, the PNP expanded its electoral foothold and garnered more votes than the incumbent JLP across the nation.

In the wake of these developments, Tanya Stephens’ impassioned plea to Prime Minister Andrew Holness resonates as a call for decisive action amidst shifting allegiances and heightened political engagement. As the nation awaits the unfolding of further electoral developments, the repercussions of this local government election set the stage for a pivotal juncture in Jamaica’s democratic journey.
