The vibrant atmosphere of Unruly Fest, sponsored by Magnum Tonic Wine and curated by dancehall star Popcaan, drew a diverse crowd eager for a night of stellar performances at the Phillips Field Sports Complex in Yallahs, St Thomas. The event, marking its return after a hiatus since 2019, featured a lineup that included local stars, namely Sean Paul, Skillibeng, I-Wayne, Louie Culture and Najeeri, along with surprise appearances by MIGOS rapper Quavo.
However, despite the successful celebration of Jamaican culture and music, the night took an unexpected turn just before 5 am when police officers intervened, bringing the show to an abrupt end. The law enforcement officials cited a permit extension up to 4 am, with an allowance for the organizers to continue until 5 am. Popcaan, visibly dissatisfied with the police intervention, expressed his frustration, blaming them for hindering St Thomas’s progress. Despite the premature conclusion, the artists, including Popcaan, Tarrus Riley, and Chronic Law, continued performing, albeit unheard by the aggrieved audience.
The patrons, unhappy with the police’s decision, were left to reflect on an otherwise memorable night cut short by unforeseen circumstances. Unruly Fest is not only a cultural and musical celebration but also a fundraiser for Popcaan’s foundation, aimed to impact the community positively. Proceeds from the event contributed to annual Christmas and back-to-school treats and financial support for residents in need within the parish of St Thomas.
