Renowned dancehall artist Popcaan, born Andre Sutherland, is facing five charges stemming from the 2023 staging of Unruly Fest held in Yallahs, St. Thomas, on December 22. The event, making a comeback since a hiatus in 2019, showcased a vibrant atmosphere with a diverse audience eager for stellar performances at the Phillips Field Sports Complex.

Despite the successful celebration featuring local stars and surprise international appearances, the night took an unexpected turn just before 5 am when police officers intervened, prematurely ending the show. The law enforcement officials cited a permit extension up to 4 am, allowing organizers to continue until 5 am. Popcaan, visibly dissatisfied, expressed frustration, blaming the police for hindering St. Thomas’s progress. Patrons, reflecting on the memorable night cut short by unforeseen circumstances, were left dissatisfied with the police’s decision.

Popcaan has been slapped with a myriad of charges, including the use of indecent language, disorderly conduct, using abusive and calumnious language, issuing threats to police officers, and breaches of the Noise Abatement Act. He received a summons upon visiting the Police Area 5 Headquarters in Kingston and is set to appear in the St. Thomas Parish Court on Wednesday, January 10.

Unruly Fest serves not only as a cultural and musical celebration but also as a fundraiser for Popcaan’s foundation, contributing to annual Christmas and back-to-school treats and providing financial support for residents in need within the parish of St. Thomas.
