The organizers of the MTV Europe Music Awards (EMA) have introduced a new category, ‘Best Afrobeats,’ in the upcoming 2023 edition of the awards. This exciting addition was revealed when the official 2023 MTV EMA nomination list was unveiled on Wednesday, September 4.
In this groundbreaking category, notable Nigerian musicians, including Davido, Rema, Burna Boy, Asake, Ayra Starr, and French sensation Aya Nakamura, have been selected as the inaugural candidates, representing the vibrant and influential Afrobeats genre.
Furthermore, Rema’s collaboration on the hit track ‘Calm Down‘ with American superstar Selena Gomez has earned nominations in both the ‘Best Song‘ and ‘Best Collaboration‘ categories, adding to the event’s anticipation.
In the ‘Best African Act‘ category, Burna Boy, Asake, Tanzanian star Diamond Platnumz, Cameroonian diva Libianca, and South Africa’s Tyler ICU are among the nominees, showcasing the diversity and talent within the African music scene.
Notably, Burna Boy has also earned a nomination in the ‘Best Live Performer‘ category, alongside global icons like Beyoncé, Ed Sheeran, Taylor Swift, and The Weeknd (born Abel Tesfaye), underscoring his remarkable stage presence and artistry.
American sensation Taylor Swift leads the pack with an impressive seven nominations for the 2023 MTV EMAs, including ‘Best Artist,’ ‘Best Song,’ and ‘Best Video,’ particularly for her single ‘Anti-Hero.’
