In a surprising turn of events, the highly-anticipated MTV Europe Music Awards (MTV EMAs), set to honour the finest achievements in global music, have been abruptly cancelled in light of the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict.

Originally scheduled for November 5th in Paris, France, the event boasted a star-studded roster of nominees, including music icons Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus, Nicki Minaj, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Metallica. Regrettably, this celebration of musical excellence will not unfold as planned.

In a statement released via the platform X, MTV has attributed this cancellation to the “volatility of world events” and a genuine “abundance of caution” for the safety and well-being of all parties involved. The network underscored the importance of prioritising the security of the event’s staff, crew, artists, fans, and partners, who collectively contribute from across the globe to make the MTV EMAs a reality.

“The MTV EMAs are an annual celebration of global music,” the network emphasised. “As we watch the devastating events in Israel and Gaza continue to unfold, this does not feel like a moment for a global celebration. With thousands of lives already lost, it is a moment of mourning.” – the statement read.

MTV has reassured fans that the voting process will proceed as planned, and the winning artists will still receive their well-deserved MTV EMA Awards. In conclusion, the network expressed its eagerness to host the MTV EMAs again, with the next edition anticipated in November 2024.

This year’s MTV EMAs brought forth an array of esteemed nominees, with Taylor Swift leading the pack with seven nominations. Olivia Rodrigo and SZA followed closely, each boasting six nominations.

A noteworthy development for this year’s awards was the introduction of the “Best Afrobeats” category, featuring prominent artists such as Asake, Aya Nakamura, Ayra Starr, Burna Boy, Davido, and Rema competing for the coveted accolade. Additionally, 26 artists earned their debut nominations, including BTS’ Jungkook, who secured three solo nods.

Despite the unfortunate cancellation of the live event in Paris, fans can continue casting votes on the MTV EMA website until October 31st, 11:59 p.m. CET. Furthermore, the awards show’s social media channels will facilitate voting for the “biggest fans” and “best group” categories as the show date draws nearer, with MTV ultimately announcing the best video winner.
