Recording artiste D’Angel and former Dancehall Queen Carlene Smith have offered insights into their experiences with co-parenting their children alongside ex-partner Beenie Man while shedding light on his absence from their children’s lives.Â
The dancehall doctor, self-styled as the “girls dem sugar”, had a romantic entanglement with Carlene during the 1990s, resulting in their daughter Crystal. Furthermore, Beenie Man has a son, Marco Dean, with his ex-wife, D’Angel. The dancehall hitmaker has sired several other children with other women.
During a broader conversation about the crucial role of both parents in their child’s life, D’Angel and Carlene addressed the issue of Beenie Man’s parenting during a live stream on D’Angel’s “Live at 5” session. Carlene conveyed the challenges children face when they lack a relationship with their father, particularly when he is a prominent public figure like Beenie Man. She noted that this absence significantly impacted Marco Dean, Crystal, and Moses Davis Jr. The former dancehall queen revealed the children’s struggle to gather information about their father’s life from public sources rather than hearing it directly from him.
Carlene underscored that even though Beenie Man had been actively involved in Crystal’s early years, the situation was less than ideal. D’Angel shared her perspective, explaining that she and Carlene felt responsible for filling the void created by Beenie Man’s absence. She emphasized that when a public figure and icon like Beenie Man is not actively part of their children’s lives, it profoundly affects them.
D’Angel disclosed that Marco Dean had not heard from Beenie Man for an extended period. She stressed the significance of Beenie Man realizing that his children need him. D’Angel also recounted a past incident where one of Beenie Man’s former partners prevented him from performing with her out of jealousy. This interference affected her income and her ability to provide for her son.Â
This discussion highlights the intricate challenges of co-parenting, particularly within the context of public figures, and underscores their responsibilities towards their children.
