Award-winning actor Denzel Washington is reportedly in “final negotiations” to co-star in the upcoming Gladiator sequel.
The film will also feature actor Paul Mescal, with Ridley Scott returning to direct. Two veterans of the original film, costume designer Janty Yates and production designer Arthur Max, have also joined the team. Yates won an Oscar for her costume design in the first film, while Max received a nomination for his production design.
The details of Washington’s role in the sequel are being kept under wraps, but sources close to the project suggest that he was thrilled with the “bad-ass” character that Scott had written with him in mind. This isn’t the first time the pair has worked together, with Washington previously starring in Scott’s American Gangster.
Although Russell Crowe’s Maximus will not return, Mescal will play Lucius, the young boy that Maximus saved after killing Commodus in the gladiatorial ring in the original film.
Fans of the 2000 movie will be eager to see what new adventures await in the highly anticipated sequel.
