Multi-billion-dollar French luxury powerhouse Hermès has appointed British-Jamaican designer Grace Wales Bonner as Creative Director of its menswear division, marking a defining moment in the brand’s 188-year history. The announcement, made Tuesday, sees Wales Bonner succeeding Véronique Nichanian, who steps down after an extraordinary 37-year tenure. The move signals a bold generational and cultural shift for Hermès, one of the most prestigious names in global fashion.

At just 34, Wales Bonner has built an impressive reputation for her thoughtful blend of European tailoring and Afro-Caribbean influences, rooted in her South London upbringing and Jamaican heritage. “It’s a dream to join such a magical house,” she said, expressing her excitement to take on the role. Her first collection for Hermès is set to debut in January 2027, while Nichanian’s farewell collection will take the stage during the Autumn-Winter 2026–2027 Paris shows.

Hermès’ decision comes amid a wave of creative reshuffling across the luxury industry, following major appointments at Chanel, Dior, and Loewe. Despite global market pressures, Hermès has shown resilience, boasting €8 billion (US$9.3 billion) in revenue during the first half of 2025—a testament to its enduring craftsmanship and prestige. Wales Bonner’s arrival injects fresh creative energy into the brand, aligning with its renewed focus on culture, identity, and storytelling through design.

The London-born designer—whose father hails from Jamaica—has consistently celebrated cultural duality through her label Wales Bonner, winning accolades such as the LVMH Young Designer Prize, CFDA International Men’s Designer of the Year, and an MBE for services to fashion. Hermès artistic director Pierre-Alexis Dumas praised her “contemporary view of the world, of crafting and of culture,” adding that her perspective will help shape the maison’s next chapter.

Wales Bonner’s appointment is more than a fashion milestone—it’s a moment of representation and resonance, particularly for Caribbean creatives breaking into global luxury. As the first woman of Black heritage to lead menswear at a major luxury house, her rise stands as proof that heritage and high fashion can coexist beautifully on the world stage.
