Most sequels are expected to live in the shadow of the original. Malie Donn’s Vancleef Pt 2 did the opposite. Instead of replacing Van Cleef, the follow-up helped turn one hit into a full-blown chart phenomenon, with the two records combining for an impressive 10 No. 1 positions across Apple Music and Deezer. The original Van Cleef accounts for six Apple Music chart-toppers, while Vancleef Pt 2 has added three No. 1s on Apple Music and another on Deezer Jamaica.
The numbers reveal two different but equally compelling success stories. Van Cleef has emerged as the wider Caribbean phenomenon, reaching No. 1 in Anguilla, Bermuda, the Cayman Islands, Guyana, St. Lucia and Turks and Caicos while charting across several other territories. Meanwhile, Vancleef Pt 2 has delivered its own powerful run, topping Apple Music in Antigua and Barbuda, Jamaica and St. Vincent and the Grenadines, before also reaching No. 1 on Deezer Jamaica.
What makes the achievement particularly interesting is that the sequel has not pushed the original out of the conversation. Both songs have continued charting simultaneously, giving Malie Donn a rare double presence across Jamaica and the wider Caribbean. While Vancleef Pt 2 has found particularly strong traction in Jamaica, including reaching the top of Apple Music and Deezer, the original continues to demonstrate remarkable regional strength, extending its reach across multiple Caribbean markets.
The momentum has also arrived during a defining period for the dancehall artiste. Malie Donn released his debut studio album, The Golden Child, on September 4 via VP Records, with the project quickly making an impact on the U.S. iTunes Reggae Albums Chart before climbing from its No. 4 debut to No. 3. Featuring collaborations with Squash, Byron Messia and Antuwang, the 21-track album represents the next step in a commercial run increasingly being powered by the continued success of Van Cleef and its sequel.
That may be the real story behind the ‘Van Cleef’ Effect. Malie Donn did not simply score a breakout hit and attempt to recreate it. He kept the original moving, delivered a sequel that became a chart force in its own right and used the resulting momentum to launch a major album campaign. One song became two versions, and two versions have now produced 10 No. 1s, turning Van Cleef into one of Malie Donn’s most significant career-defining moments yet.
