Multi-hyphenated entertainer Demarco is being lauded by fans and some industry players for showing respect to several of his peers, including longtime nemesis Mavado.
In a series of Instagram posts via his official account, the Fallen Soldier hitmaker paid homage to seven of dancehall’s most noted luminaries for their respective contributions to the industry, among them the Warlord Bounty Killer, Beenie Man, Shaggy, Sean Paul, Elephant Man, Vybz Kartel and Mavado.
The individualised photos were affixed with the generic caption,
“WE APPRECIATE EVERYTHING YOU’VE DONE FOR OUR GENRE!!! 💐 #FLOWERS” followed by their respective hashtags.
The general consensus is that the acknowledgement by Demarco shows growth and maturity on his part, as dancehall and its practitioners tend to be driven predominantly by egotism and testosterone, which has led to several divisions and longstanding feuds up to the present.
The rift between Demarco and Mavado is rooted in remarks made back in 2016 during an ER interview with noted broadcaster Anthony Miller. While promoting his collaboration “Miracle” featuring Vybz Kartel, the Atlanta-based deejay claimed that Mavado was “all hype and little to no talent”. This also spawned several dissed tracks, namely “King Kong” and “Dem Fraid“. However, the Gullyside artiste did not entertain the rivalry.
Demarco’s latest album, “Melody”, is currently among the 67 Reggae albums shortlisted by the Recording Academy for consideration in the Best Reggae Albums category of the 65th GRAMMY Awards.
