In a meaningful celebration of Jamaican culture, dancehall legends Moses’ Beenie Man’ Davis and Rodney’ Bounty Killer’ Price were among several Jamaicans honoured with national awards during Jamaica’s 62nd Independence celebration at the National Stadium on Tuesday, August 6th. Both artists were bestowed the Order of Distinction in the Rank of Officer, a prestigious acknowledgement of their significant contributions to the dancehall genre and Jamaican music.
Prime Minister Andrew Holness presented the awards. Interestingly, both Beenie Man and Bounty Killer took to social media to also acknowledge Opposition Leader Mark Golding for his pivotal role in advocating for their recognition. This public gratitude underscores the widespread respect and appreciation for Golding’s efforts within the entertainment fraternity.
Beenie Man expressed his deep gratitude in an Instagram post, stating, “Honored to receive the Jamaica Iconic Award presented by Prime Minister Andrew Holness and the honourable Babsy Grange! ?? A huge thank you to Opposition Leader Mark Golding for your acknowledgement in making this historic moment possible.“ He extended his thanks to his family, friends, fans, and fellow musicians, highlighting the collective support that has shaped his illustrious career. Additionally, he congratulated Bounty Killer, emphasizing their shared journey and mutual inspiration within the music industry.
Bounty Killer, in his own heartfelt post, wrote, “SEE WE DEH IN THE MOMENT?????? First I want to thank almighty God for life and this immense amount of talent…last but not least a very special Thank You to the honourable @andrewholnessjm @babsygrange also the opposition leader @markjgolding who had publicly advocated for this day as well and all whose involved in the decision making blessings to y’all ????.“ He paid tribute to his late parents and fallen comrade Boom Dandimite, reflecting on the journey that has brought him to this moment of national recognition.
Responding to both entertainers, Mark Golding reciprocated the respect and admiration. He commented on Bounty Killer’s post, “Respect Rodney ✊? Well deserved. Glad I could help to make this happen it was long overdue!“ On Beenie Man’s post, Golding remarked, “My pleasure Moses! This was long overdue and more than well deserved. You have taken our music across the globe with an energy and joy that embodies the Jamaican spirit! ?? Nuff respect ✊?”
The official award ceremony will be held at King’s House in October on National Heroes Day, where Beenie Man, Bounty Killer, and other distinguished honorees will be celebrated for their outstanding contributions to Jamaican culture and society. This acknowledgement not only highlights their individual achievements but also marks a significant milestone in the recognition of dancehall music on the national stage.
