More than a decade after breaking onto the dancehall scene, Dexta Daps says his longevity has never been about chasing trends. Instead, the Jamaican hitmaker credits authenticity, heartfelt songwriting and genuine emotional connection with fans for helping him remain one of the genre’s most distinctive voices. As he prepares to return to the Dream Weekend stage for Daydreams in Montego Bay on August 1, the entertainer reflected on the principles that have guided his career while revealing that new music, an upcoming album and international touring are firmly on the horizon.
Dexta Daps, born Louis Grandison, launched his recording career in 2012 with Save Me Jah and May You Be before gaining wider recognition through songs such as Morning Love and Jealous Ova featuring Tifa. His breakout hit Shabba Madda Pot elevated him to another level in 2015, paving the way for collaborations with artistes including Kranium, Masicka, Mavado, M.I.A., Davido, Kiesza and Tory Lanez. Looking back on his journey, the singer said staying true to the sound that introduced him to audiences has been the foundation of his success. “I evolve with the production sounds because music is always changing, but I don’t chase trends. At the end of the day, it’s about creating solid melodies, real emotion and delivering performances that genuinely connect with people,” he said.
While acknowledging that his creative process continues to evolve, Dexta Daps said every project allows him to refine his storytelling and musical arrangements without losing the soulful style that has become his signature. He added that, beyond chart success, he hopes listeners remember him for creating music that resonated with people during different moments in their lives. “I always wanted the music to feel honest and for the performances to leave a lasting impression. If people can look back and say my songs helped them through different moments in life, then that’s something I’ll always be proud of,” he explained.
With anticipation building for Dream Weekend, Dexta Daps also hinted that fans should expect more than a standard performance, teasing surprises while promising the high-energy stage show he has become known for. Beyond the summer festivities, the entertainer confirmed that his focus is on completing his upcoming album, releasing more music and expanding his international tour schedule, signalling that the next chapter of his career is already well underway.
