After securing a hard-fought U.S. trademark win, Dr. Michelle Gill is shifting from defence to advocacy—using her experience to help Caribbean artistes and entrepreneurs protect their brands before they lose them. The Guyanese-born media personality recently gained full federal trademark rights for Get With the Fix Radio as of March 31, 2026, following a costly and emotionally taxing legal battle that exposed just how vulnerable creatives can be without intellectual property protection.

Launched during the 2020 pandemic, the platform quickly grew into a vibrant digital hub connecting Caribbean and American audiences through music and conversation. However, a lapse in trademark status in 2021 left the brand exposed. By early 2025, another party attempted to claim ownership of the name, forcing Dr. Gill into a complex legal fight. “You don’t own your brand until it’s officially trademarked,” she said, reflecting on the ordeal. “Anyone can claim it and you could lose all your hard work.” Her eventual victory now grants her exclusive rights to the brand, reinforcing the critical importance of securing trademarks in an increasingly competitive global market.

Beyond media, Dr. Gill’s influence spans philanthropy and education. As founder of Michelle’s Foundation Inc., she has led youth-focused initiatives across the United States, Jamaica, and Guyana, while also making inroads in the music industry—most notably contributing to the success of Zagga’s Piece of Paradise, which topped the iTunes Reggae Chart. Now, she is leveraging her expanded platform to educate others, offering free guidance to creatives navigating trademark processes and brand protection.

The move signals a growing awareness within the Caribbean entertainment space, where many artistes continue to overlook intellectual property until it’s too late. With her own story as proof, Dr. Gill is positioning herself as both a cautionary tale and a trusted resource—ensuring the next generation of creatives not only build brands, but truly own them.
