On the heels of his stellar showcase at New York’s UBS Arena, Dancehall legend Beenie Man has earned yet another career-defining moment. The Grammy-winning icon has been named among nine globally influential artists to be featured on NPR Music’s acclaimed Tiny Desk series, as part of this year’s Black Music Month celebrations. The honour marks a fitting tribute to the 25th anniversary of his landmark album Art & Life, released in July 2000, which played a pivotal role in introducing dancehall to mainstream global audiences.
Sharing this prestigious spotlight are a diverse group of trailblazing musicians whose timeless works continue to shape the musical landscape. The celebration includes Amerie with Touch (20th anniversary), CeCe Winans’ gospel classic Alone in His Presence (30th), E-40’s In a Major Way (30th), Keyshia Cole’s debut The Way It Is (20th), rock pioneers Living Colour’s Time’s Up (35th), Wiz Khalifa’s breakthrough Kush & Orange Juice (15th), Stanley Clarke’s jazz fusion masterpiece School Days (50th), and Alex Isley’s soulful LUXURY (10th). Together, these albums represent a mosaic of Black musical excellence across genres and generations.
“Big up ? Honored to be featured on NPR Tiny Desk for Black Music Month! Can’t wait to share my performance with you all. Stay tuned!” Beenie Man shared excitedly on social media, fueling anticipation for his upcoming performance. While no official air date has been revealed, fans are already buzzing about what the “Sim Simma” hitmaker will bring to the beloved platform.
Since its inception in 2008, NPR’s Tiny Desk has become a cultural institution, famed for its intimate, stripped-down performances that remove the glitz of big stage production in favour of raw musicianship and authenticity. From global superstars like Adele, Usher, and T-Pain to rising indie artists, Tiny Desk offers a rare glimpse into the heart of an artist’s craft. Beenie Man now joins an elite roster of Jamaican performers such as Protoje, Lila Ike, Chronixx, Sevana, Koffee, Damian “Jr Gong” Marley, and Sean Paul who have previously graced the Tiny Desk stage—further cementing Jamaica’s enduring impact on global music.
