Fresh off one of his biggest songs of the year, Jamaican dancehall artiste Malie Donn is giving fans a deeper look into the story behind his meteoric rise. As Van Cleef continues its impressive run across the Caribbean with No. 1 Apple Music rankings in Antigua and Barbuda, the Cayman Islands, Guyana and Turks and Caicos, alongside more than 4.2 million YouTube views, the deejay sat down with Angela Yee on Way Up with Angela Yee to discuss the inspiration behind his highly anticipated debut studio album, The Golden Child, which arrives on September 4 via VP Records.

During the candid conversation, Malie Donn reflected on the challenges that shaped both his career and his outlook, explaining that The Golden Child represents far more than a collection of songs. Instead, he described it as the culmination of years of perseverance and determination, while calling it his first true opportunity to showcase every side of his artistry. “The Golden Child represents my journey. Every obstacle I’ve faced has helped shape who I am today, and this album is my opportunity to show every side of me as an artist. I’m excited for the world to finally hear it,” he said.

The interview comes at a time when the dancehall star’s momentum continues to build across multiple platforms. Beyond Van Cleef dominating regional streaming charts, Cups Up is currently charting in 17 Apple Music territories, while 7:00 has secured chart placements in 16 countries. His previous project, Leak The Hard Drive, has also returned to Apple Music charts in several Caribbean markets, reflecting growing interest in his catalogue ahead of the album’s release. Meanwhile, YouTube Music’s Trending chart in Jamaica currently features two of his songs inside the Top 20, with Sweets Man at No. 5 and Back 2 Basic at No. 19.

Adding to the anticipation, Malie Donn is set to release his new single, Holiday, on August 7 through VP Records before unveiling the 20-track The Golden Child, which includes collaborations with Squash, Byron Messia and Antuwang. The album rollout will also be supported by a string of international performances, including shows in New Jersey and Hartford before a headline appearance at Indigo at The O2 in London on September 5, one day after the album’s release. With commercial momentum growing and international exposure increasing, the emerging dancehall star appears poised to enter the biggest chapter of his career yet.
