New York City Mayor Eric Adams has officially proclaimed August 9 as Christopher Martin Day, honouring the Jamaican reggae star’s enduring contributions to music and culture. The special recognition was announced during The Official People’s Ball on Saturday, August 9, hosted by the Jamaica Independence Foundation, Inc. (JIFINYC) at Terrace on the Park in Queens, NY. In addition to the mayor’s proclamation, Martin was presented with the prestigious Ambassador and Innovator of Reggae Music Award, as well as proclamations from the US House of Representatives and the New York State Senate, signed by Congresswoman Yvette Clarke and State Senator Kevin Parker.

The event formed part of Jamaica’s 63rd Independence celebrations in New York and also paid tribute to fellow 2025 honorees Ska Ambassador Alphanso Castro and James Haynes. The evening blended culture, style, and entertainment, featuring a cocktail reception, fashion show, silent auction, dinner, and live performances from DJ Roy of Road International and a live band. Martin’s presentation was a highlight of the night, as he was joined on stage by StacyMac, media personality and guest host; J. Lexy Brooks, President of JIFINYC; and VP Records’ executives Chris Chin and Patricia “Miss Pat” Chin.

Just days before the New York honours, Martin had graced the stage at Jamaica’s Grand Gala at Kingston’s National Stadium on Independence Day (August 6), sharing the spotlight with reggae legends Beres Hammond, Capleton, and Leroy Sibbles. His back-to-back appearances on such prestigious platforms underscored his influence both at home and abroad, cementing his place among the genre’s most respected voices.

Taking to Instagram to share the news with his fans, the singer wrote, “August 9th, is officially Christopher Martin Day in the city of New York ?. Thank you to the office of the mayor, to my label @vprecords, to @jifinyc and its executive body, to my family and friends and all the supporters across the world who’ve kept me solid for 20 years — this is all because of you, your love and belief in me. Mi heart full and my eyes as well ?. Never stop believing in yourself and set your goals but have no limits. God is indeed the greatest ??.” His words reflected both humility and an unwavering commitment to inspiring others.

From humble beginnings in Jamaica to the global reggae stage, Christopher Martin’s two-decade career has been defined by chart-topping hits, a dynamic stage presence, and a message rooted in love, perseverance, and cultural pride. The proclamation of Christopher Martin Day in New York City not only celebrates his artistic achievements but also recognizes the powerful role reggae continues to play in bridging cultures and uniting communities across borders.
