What began as a Jamaican dancehall production movement is increasingly becoming an international force, with DJ Mac and CrashDummy’s WYFL Riddim now connected to a major U.S. hip-hop chart achievement. Remy Ma’s surprise six-track EP, Alimony, released on September 25, climbed to No. 1 on the U.S. iTunes Hip-Hop/Rap Albums chart, with its closing track, “W.Y.F.L.,” produced and credited to DJ Mac, Remy Ma and CrashDummy. The achievement places the Jamaican production duo at the centre of another significant crossover moment between dancehall and American hip-hop.
The connection between Remy Ma and the producers dates back to April, when “W.Y.F.L.” was released as a standalone single through DJ Mac MUSIC and CrashDummy Productions. The track, which features Remy Ma rapping over the WYFL production, was later incorporated into Alimony as its sixth and final song. The EP itself spans six tracks and 19 minutes, with additional appearances from Tink, ROE and KeKe Wyatt, while production credits include DJ MAC and CrashDummy alongside several other producers.
For DJ Mac and CrashDummy, the Remy Ma achievement adds another international chapter to a WYFL campaign that has already attracted an impressive roster of Jamaican and global artists. WYFL Riddim The Album, released in May, credits both producers across a 22-track project featuring names including Vybz Kartel, Mavado, Chronic Law, Valiant, Skeng, Jahshii, Silk Boss and Anthony B. The pair have increasingly positioned WYFL as more than a single riddim, using it as a platform capable of connecting dancehall with audiences and artists outside Jamaica.
The significance of the Remy Ma collaboration is amplified by the EP’s wider reception. Contemporary coverage confirmed Alimony’s No. 1 iTunes Hip-Hop/Rap position, while the project also entered the overall U.S. iTunes Albums Top 10 during its opening period. With “W.Y.F.L.” now embedded in a project that has generated substantial attention around Remy Ma’s highly publicised personal and musical comeback, DJ Mac and CrashDummy have another powerful statistic behind their growing international résumé.
For the Jamaican producers, however, the bigger story may be what comes next. WYFL has moved from a dancehall riddim into an increasingly recognisable cross-genre production brand, and Remy Ma’s Alimony breakthrough suggests that DJ MAC and CrashDummy’s sound has the potential to travel well beyond its Jamaican origins.
