After more than three decades in dancehall, Macka Diamond says she will retire from music at the end of the year, claiming that criticism over her age and treatment by sections of the industry have left her feeling unwanted and unappreciated. The veteran entertainer, who began her career as Lady Mackerel, says she is ready to prioritise her happiness, reconnect with her son and live on her own terms after dedicating much of her life to music.

“I choose to retire because dem a say dem nuh want mi inna dancehall and mi a nuh nothing to them inna Jamaica, so mi just done,” Macka Diamond told THE STAR. “I want to be happy and free, and my birthday is coming up in January and I want to reunite with my son.” She added that her decision follows years of personal sacrifice, saying, “I have given too much of my life to music and I lose my son to it, and people still a bring mi down. I am tired of it.” The artiste also accused some industry figures of “bullying” her over her age, while crediting her fans with continuing to support her when she felt overlooked by others in the business.

Macka Diamond also pushed back against criticism surrounding her presence on TikTok, where her participation in live “love matches” and receipt of high-value virtual gifts have become another source of scrutiny. She rejected suggestions that embracing the platform meant abandoning her music career, questioning why her social-media activity became controversial only when money entered the conversation. “All of a sudden uno a talk say mi over TikTok a beg; but when I was over Instagram and others and a go live, uno wasn’t complaining,” she said. Her comments add another layer to an ongoing conversation around how veteran entertainers use social platforms to monetise their audiences and remain connected to fans.

Despite her frustration, Macka Diamond insists she is leaving dancehall with her legacy intact. “I done have my hit songs already, so no one can take that away from mi,” she declared. “I am the one leaving dancehall and I will forever be a superstar. No one can take away my royalties or whatever is due.” For an artiste who has spent more than 30 years navigating one of Jamaica’s most competitive music industries, the planned retirement signals the end of a major chapter, but Macka Diamond is making it clear that she does not consider walking away the same thing as being forgotten.
