Renowned Jamaican graphic artist and visual designer, Neville Garrick, passed away on November 14 in California after a brief battle with cancer, as confirmed by his family. Garrick gained widespread recognition for his award-winning role as the art director for Bob Marley, leaving an enduring legacy through timeless album covers and designs that continue to be celebrated globally. Billboard Magazine recently acknowledged his inaugural album cover for Bob Marley’s “Rastaman Vibration” as the 22nd Best Album Cover of all time.
A master storyteller and prolific artist, Garrick’s influence extended beyond graphic design. He played a pivotal role in the reggae genre, crafting over 100 album covers for legendary artists such as Bob Marley, Jimmy Cliff, Peter Tosh, and others. His artistic genius was prominently displayed in the revolutionary stage and lighting design for Bob Marley during the 1970s and 1980s, notably the iconic “Haile Selassie I” setup. This design not only marked a visionary force in the global creative landscape but also introduced Ethiopian art and culture to Western audiences.
Beyond his artistic contributions, Garrick served as a key figure in preserving Bob Marley’s legacy, acting as the first Executive Director of the Bob Marley Foundation from 1990 to 1996. His dedication extended to co-producing the 1992 documentary “Time Will Tell,” offering rare insights into Bob Marley’s life. Garrick’s final project with the Marley family was as the Historic Advisor for Paramount Films’ Bob Marley Biopic: One Love, scheduled for release in February 2024.
Survived by his brother, three children, grandchildren, former wife, niece, and grand-niece, Neville Garrick’s impact on the artistic and cultural landscape is immeasurable. The Prime Minister of Jamaica, Andrew Holness, expressed condolences, recognizing Garrick’s exceptional talents and indelible mark on Jamaican graphic art and design.
