The Jamaica Reggae Industry Association (JaRIA) is set to host a special ‘Reggae Wednesdays‘ event on October 25, 2023. This gathering, joined by several esteemed members of the island’s reggae community, aims to pay tribute to the legacy of Michael “Ibo” Cooper and his substantial contributions to the reggae genre.
The commemorative event will take place at The Karl Hendrickson Auditorium, Jamaica College, at 189 Old Hope Road in Kingston. The program is scheduled to commence at 6:00 p.m. Notable reggae luminaries, including Third World, Inner Circle, Big Youth, Warrior King, Tony Rebel, Nadine Sutherland, Kumar Fyah, Ras-I, Levy’s Heritage, the Edna Manley College Band, and more, will deliver tribute performances in honour of Michael Cooper.
All attendees are encouraged to adorn themselves in the iconic colours of red, green, and gold.
The passing of Michael ‘Ibo’ Cooper on Thursday, October 12, at the age of 71, follows the recent sorrowful loss of his wife, Joy Cooper, on September 29 and the tragic death of their son, Arif Cooper, on March 5 earlier this year. Arif’s untimely passing occurred during a performance at the Ranny Williams Entertainment Center in St. Andrew.
The collective departure of Michael ‘Ibo’ Cooper, his wife, and son represents a profound tragedy for the Jamaican music industry. Their indelible contributions to the nation and the global music landscape will be deeply mourned and forever cherished.
