To commemorate Reggae Month 2024, a poignant tribute will be rendered to the iconic reggae crooner Dennis Brown at the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts in Kingston. The event is scheduled to unfold on Thursday, February 1, marking the commencement of a month-long celebration of Jamaica’s rich musical heritage.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment, and Sport, Olivia ‘Babsy’ Grange, on Sunday. Dennis Brown, affectionately known as the “Crown Prince of Reggae,” left an indelible mark with over 75 recorded albums and a significant influence on the lover’s rock subgenre of reggae. Notably, his impact resonated with legendary figures such as Bob Marley, who regarded Brown as his favourite singer. Moreover, Brown served as an inspiration to a multitude of reggae artists spanning several decades.
Minister Grange emphasized the extensive lineup of events for Reggae Month, encompassing tributes to reggae icons, symposiums, and a series of activities across Jamaica, with a particular focus on Negril, renowned as the island’s entertainment hub. The overarching theme for the month’s festivities is aptly coined ‘Come ketch di RIDDIM.’
The calendar for Reggae Month is packed with core events, including a musical tribute to reggae icons, the Reggae Gold Award, Dancehall awards, Young Reggae Ambassadors, Jamaica Reggae Industry Association (JaRIA) Open University symposium, and a Children of the Icons concert. Minister Grange directed interested individuals to access further details on events and activities through the Reggae Jamaica mobile app, available on the Google Play Store.
