Dancehall songstress Shenseea has become the latest in a growing list of Jamaican entertainers to receive a nomination for the coveted MTV Video Music Award (VMAs).
The Lick singer was nominated for her “Push performance of the year” with the collaborative effort R U That featuring American-based rapper Savage 21. The single is among the many offerings on her debut album ALPHA, released on March 11, 2022.
Breaking the news to her over 5.7 million followers on Instagram, Shenseea revealed the accomplishment via her a story post with the caption, “The first VMA nomination for me AND Jamaica click the link and vote everyday”.
Ironically, she is the second Jamaican female artiste to receive such an accolade following former dancehall queen Lady Saw’s 2003 nomination for Underneath It All, featuring global pop group No Doubt. Other Jamaicans who have received a nod previously include 2002 winner Bounty Killer for Best Pop Video and Best Group Video with No Doubt’s Hey Baby. In 2003 Dancehall superstar Sean Paul was nominated for Best New Artist In A Video and Best Dance Video for Get Busy. He also received another nod in 2006 for Best Dance Video for Temperature. Colourful entertainer Elephant Man secured his nomination for Pon Di River in 2004, and rounding off the list is OMI, with his 2015 nod for Song Of The Summer for Cheerleader.
The 2022 staging of the VMAs will get underway on August 28 at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. Fans of the Award ceremony may vote for their favourite stars in the respective categories at: MTV.com
