On Thursday, May 23, Jamaican-American singer Sean Kingston was arrested in California on fraud charges hours after a police raid at his rented mansion in South Florida led to the arrest of his mother, Janice Turner. The Broward County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that Kingston was detained without incident on a Florida warrant at Fort Irwin, an Army base located approximately 150 miles northeast of Los Angeles.
Earlier in the day, Broward SWAT detectives raided Kingston’s 14,000-square-foot home in Southwest Ranches, a luxurious Fort Lauderdale suburb known for housing celebrities such as Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Miami Dolphins star Tyreek Hill. During the raid, the detectives arrested Kingston’s 61-year-old mother, who has a history of legal issues, including a 2006 conviction for bank fraud.
Robert Rosenblatt, the attorney representing Kingston and his mother, acknowledged the allegations and expressed confidence in resolving the matter favourably in court. Kingston, who is currently on probation for trafficking stolen property, will remain in California pending extradition to Florida. The recent allegations are also linked to a lawsuit filed against Kingston by a Florida company, accusing him of defrauding them over a high-end television installation. Attorney Dennis Card, representing the plaintiff, claims that Kingston leveraged his celebrity status to commit the fraud, involving his mother in the process.
