Grammy-winning Nigerian artist Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu, widely known as Burna Boy, has secured an impressive seven nominations for the 2023 BET Hip-Hop Awards.
This achievement firmly establishes him as a prominent figure in the international hip-hop scene. He shares the distinction of the third most nominations with DJ Khaled, trailing behind Drake, who leads with nine nominations, and Cardi B and 21 Savage, who have both garnered 12 nods.
Burna Boy’s historic nomination in the Artist of the Year category marks the first time an African artist has been recognized in this prestigious category at the BET Hip-Hop Awards. In this category, he will compete against other celebrated artists such as Kendrick Lamar, J.Cole, 21 Savage, Drake, and Cardi B, among others.
His nominations also encompass various aspects of his musical prowess, including Song of the Year for “Sittin’ On Top Of The World” featuring 21 Savage, Best Hip-Hop Video for the same track, Best Collaboration for the aforementioned song, as well as recognition in categories such as Best Live Performer, Lyricist of the Year, and Hustler of the Year.
Notably, in the Best International Flow category, artists from Ghana, Zambia, and South Africa have received nominations. However, it is interesting to observe that, for the first time since the inception of this category in 2019, no Nigerian rapper has received a nomination.
