In an upcoming interview on the “Let’s Be Honest” podcast, emerging music producer and disc jockey Dj Mac responded to dancehall artiste Teejay’s accusations of trying to claim ownership of the hit record “Drift“.
Dj Mac explained that while he was not the composer of the beat or lyrics, he played a critical role in promoting the song to its current success, noting the disingenuous attempt by the Montegonian deejay to sully his reputation.
Dj Mac revealed that he invested his own resources into the project, including paying for the song’s mixing, video production, influencers on TikTok, and promotion. He actively worked to ensure the song reached a wide audience by personally reaching out to DJs and even going out at night to ensure its playability.
“me pay fi mix the song, me and him [Teejay] pay fi shoot di video, mi pay fi influencers on Tik Tok, mi pay fi promotion, mi a send out to everybaddy fi di whole a di disc jockey dem get di song, mi gah road a night time fi mek sure people play di song, when di song a play mi a dash money,” He told the host.
Dj Mac emphasized that he is not seeking ownership of the song but rather wants recognition and the appropriate financial compensation for his contributions.
The dispute between Teejay and Dj Mac also involved the transformation of “Drift” into a compilation [juggling] featuring other talents. Teejay allegedly wanted the song to remain a single to maintain the focus solely on his own track. However, Dj Mac maintained that his intention was not to take away from Teejay’s spotlight but to showcase other talents alongside him.
The controversy surrounding “Drift” highlights the significant impact it has had on Teejay’s career, leading to lucrative deals with Warner Music Group and propelling him to greater global recognition and success.
