The Department of Correctional Services (DCS) is investigating the possession of prohibited devices by three inmates, including dancehall star Vybz Kartel, at the Tower Street Correctional Facility.
It is alleged that Kartel had two cell phones confiscated from him days apart, which led to the DCS restricting his movements and conducting a thorough investigation into the matter. Although the DCS has denied Kartel’s lockdown, his attorney, Isat Buchanan, is drafting a court application seeking the court’s assistance in relation to his alleged lockdown for 23 hours per day.
Buchanan has raised several concerns about Kartel’s living conditions, including poor ventilation, which may worsen his health condition. He argues that there is no facility that can adequately care for his illness, and he is currently in private treatment. He emphasized that any inmate in similar circumstances with medical conditions deserves proper care and treatment. Buchanan plans to file the application in court on Friday, seeking the judiciary’s intervention.
The Department of Correctional Services has not yet commented on the application, and the probe into the three inmates is still ongoing.
