Should Vybz Kartel make a surprise appearance at Popcaan’s first US concert, or would keeping the two Dancehall heavyweights apart be the smarter business move? Chin of Irish and Chin believes the latter. Speaking on Soundchat Radio, the broadcaster and entertainment promoter argued that Kartel should allow Popcaan to establish his own ticket-selling power in the American market before the pair reunite for a major Gaza–Unruly production. His comments come amid renewed excitement following Popcaan’s US visa approval and growing speculation about the scale of the artiste’s anticipated American concert debut.
According to Chin, bringing Kartel onstage too early could diminish the commercial value of a future joint performance. He believes the prospect of seeing the two artistes together is a powerful attraction that should be preserved for a separate event. “Once you sell that for free, can’t sell again,” he said, explaining that the first appearance could be difficult to replicate commercially once fans have experienced it. Chin suggested that Kartel could support Popcaan backstage without making a surprise appearance, allowing the Unruly leader to command the spotlight at his own show.
Chin was careful to distinguish his argument from a debate over which artiste is bigger. Instead, he highlighted the business opportunities available to both men. Popcaan has developed an international following during a career largely spent without access to the US market, while Kartel has established his own legacy as one of Dancehall’s most influential figures. Chin believes that allowing each artiste to continue building his individual brand before combining their audiences could create a more valuable joint production in the future.
Meanwhile, the discussion comes as fans debate whether Popcaan’s first major US concert should take place at Barclays Center or a larger venue such as Yankee Stadium. Chin has predicted that Popcaan could rival Kartel’s New York ticket-selling achievements, even suggesting that the Unruly leader could sell out three or four shows in the city. However, no concert venue, date or joint appearance has been confirmed in the discussion.
For now, Chin’s position is clear: Popcaan should have the opportunity to make his own statement in America, while a Gaza–Unruly reunion remains a potential attraction for another day. Whether fans agree with that strategy is another matter, and the debate is likely to intensify as anticipation builds around Popcaan’s next career chapter.
