Dancehall artiste KipRich is facing an extraordinary period of grief after losing his newborn daughter, father and now his 98-year-old grandmother within the same year. The latest tragedy came on Tuesday, September 29, when Lila Williams died at Linstead Public Hospital, just weeks after the death of KipRich’s father, Magnus Lloyd Plunkett. The losses have left the entertainer preparing for his father’s funeral while mourning another family member who played a major role in raising him. Williams, who hailed from Redwood district in St Catherine, was hospitalised after initially being treated for dehydration. KipRich said that complications developed after intravenous treatment, with swelling spreading through both arms and causing her considerable pain.
For KipRich, however, the latest loss is deeply personal. He described Williams as a woman with whom he shared an especially close bond, saying she helped raise him and remained one of his biggest supporters throughout his career. He recalled that she kept a large photograph of him in her room and even took a pillow bearing his image with her when she was admitted to hospital. “They always say I’m her favourite grandchild,” he said, explaining the connection they shared because “she used to grow me.” Her death has left the artiste confronting the painful reality of planning two funerals almost simultaneously, with his father’s funeral scheduled for October 18.
The death of Williams follows the passing of KipRich’s father, Magnus Lloyd Plunkett, on August 14 at age 72. Plunkett, affectionately known as “Mr Chin”, had been experiencing kidney problems before he was found unresponsive at home by one of his sons. He was subsequently taken to hospital, where he was pronounced dead. KipRich remembered his father as an astute businessman, generous mentor and influential figure who could turn small ventures into successful enterprises. At the time, the artiste described 2026 as “one of the roughest years” of his life.
That grief had already begun in January, when KipRich and his partner Kizzy Don lost their newborn daughter, Miracle, who was born prematurely in Colombia on January 16 and died approximately two weeks later while receiving medical treatment. The couple subsequently held a private funeral for their daughter in Colombia. With the deaths of Miracle, his father and now his grandmother coming within an eight-month span, KipRich is confronting a succession of profound family losses as he prepares to say goodbye once again. For an artiste who has previously turned to music during difficult periods, the coming weeks will now centre largely on family, remembrance and laying his loved ones to rest.
