Respected Jamaican broadcaster Dervan Malcolm, whose voice informed, educated and connected generations of listeners during a remarkable 31-year career at Power 106 FM, has died following a period of illness. From delivering his first newscast in 1993 to becoming one of the station’s most recognisable voices, Malcolm built a legacy that stretched far beyond radio, reaching Jamaicans across the island and throughout the diaspora.
Malcolm’s journey into broadcasting began while he was a student and head boy at Calabar High School, where a performance at the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission’s Festival of the Performing Arts helped open the door to a career in media. He went on to read his first newscast on Power 106 FM on October 24, 1993, beginning a decades-long association with the station and its parent company. Over the years, he distinguished himself as a news presenter, news editor, sportscaster, talk-show producer, host and executive producer of programming.
In March 2007, Malcolm became host and producer of Both Sides of the Story, using the current affairs programme as a platform for public education, discussion and advocacy. His professional reach also extended well beyond Jamaica through The Jamaican Diaspora Live Online and numerous broadcasts from diaspora communities overseas. His commitment to serving Jamaicans abroad earned him recognition from organisations including the Union of Jamaican Alumni Associations and Team Jamaica Bickle, while he was also honoured by the City of Los Angeles and the Jamaica Awareness Association of California.
Beyond the studio, Malcolm used his platform to advocate for issues including road safety and child protection. On his LinkedIn profile, he described himself as “the Consummate Communicator anxious to make a difference and doing so with excellence.” His death closes the chapter on a distinguished broadcasting career spanning more than three decades, but for countless Jamaicans who grew up hearing his voice, Dervan Malcolm’s impact on Jamaican media and the diaspora will continue to resonate.
