‘I Don’t Do Those Things for Money’: Attorney Christopher Townsend Explains Why He Won’t Sue Mavado Over Public Comments

Renowned Jamaican attorney-at-law Christopher Townsend has revealed that fellow attorneys encouraged him to sue dancehall star Mavado over public comments made about him, but he has chosen not to pursue legal action. Speaking on The FIX Podcast, Townsend disclosed that he was even advised to seek a claim that could have taken half of the artiste’s wealth. However, he said he had no interest in pursuing money at the expense of their relationship, despite feeling disappointed by the remarks.

Reflecting on the controversy, Townsend recalled his involvement in the Jennifer Messado case, explaining that he was approached by members of the legal profession to explore ways to prevent a major scandal. He said Mavado was among the first people he encountered when he became involved and appeared visibly angry at the time. According to Townsend, they subsequently had a cordial conversation, after which he spoke with the artiste’s lawyer and made arrangements that he said benefited Mavado considerably.

Townsend said he was surprised when he later saw Mavado’s comments about him, given their previous interaction and the assistance he believed he had provided. Nevertheless, he suggested that the artiste’s anger at the time may have influenced what he said. He also acknowledged that the post remained on Mavado’s social media page. Townsend did not disclose any specific legal proceedings arising from the comments and made clear that he had no intention of turning the disagreement into a lawsuit.

“I don’t do those things for money,” Townsend explained, adding that pursuing financial compensation could create unnecessary hostility between them. He said he had known Mavado to be a decent human being and regarded the comments as a mistake rather than a reason to seek financial harm. “I’m not going to hurt him in a way that will hurt him financially for those things,” he said, emphasising that he did not need that kind of money.

Townsend’s comments offer a glimpse into the personal considerations behind a decision not to pursue legal action against one of dancehall’s most recognisable figures. While the attorney has made his position clear, his account also leaves the focus on the history between the two men and whether the public disagreement will remain unresolved.
