Reggae superstar Shaggy has praised Ninjaman’s enormous influence on dancehall, recalling how the veteran deejay inspired an entire generation to embrace his distinctive style, appearance and delivery. During an interview with Road Block Radio, Shaggy reflected on the cultural impact of Ninjaman’s emergence, declaring, “Everybody wanted to look like him. Talk like him,” as he celebrated the enduring legacy of one of dancehall’s most recognisable figures.

Shaggy’s comments highlighted the influence Ninjaman wielded during his rise, when his unique persona and commanding presence helped shape the culture and inspire fans beyond Jamaica. The Grammy-winning artiste also recalled an encounter in Europe that illustrated how deeply dancehall’s pioneers had embedded themselves in global popular culture. He shared an anecdote about a fan recognising him through one of Ninjaman’s signature expressions, “Real bad man”, underscoring the lasting reach of the veteran deejay’s identity.

The discussion also touched on the long-running debate over who deserves to be called the king of dancehall. Shaggy argued that the genre has produced multiple kings across different generations, naming artistes such as Beenie Man, Vybz Kartel, Shabba Ranks and Sean Paul among those who have achieved significant influence in their respective eras. He stressed that an artiste’s cultural impact and contribution to the music should be recognised beyond arguments over a single royal title.

For Shaggy, Ninjaman’s legacy is a reminder that dancehall’s history has been shaped by artistes whose influence extends far beyond hit songs. His remarks offer a fresh perspective on the genre’s evolution and the pioneers who helped establish its global cultural footprint.
