Vybz Kartel is showing support for fellow dancehall artiste Squash as the Montego Bay deejay prepares for his November 24 sentencing in U.S. federal court — a moment that could significantly change his future in music. After completing hurricane relief efforts in Western Jamaica, Kartel took to social media over the weekend to share a message of encouragement for the embattled artiste, telling fans: “Squash ago forward ah road man, dawg ago change him life a tell mi a tell yuh. God is the greatest, nobaddy nuh bigga than forgiveness, everybaddy can change.”

Kartel’s message has been circulating widely as Squash, born Andrae Maurice Whittaker, remains in custody following his guilty plea to being an illegal alien in possession of a firearm — a federal charge arising from a Miami Beach traffic stop that placed him under intense scrutiny. Federal agents had been monitoring him on suspicion of leading a transnational gang when they intercepted a vehicle connected to him on February 24. Authorities say Squash was observed accepting what appeared to be a firearm before entering the car, which was later pulled over. A loaded Glock 19 and a second weapon were reportedly recovered, forming the core evidence in the case.

Though prosecutors dropped a more serious charge involving an automatic weapon, the plea agreement still places him within a sentencing guideline of 24 to 63 months. Under federal regulations, he must serve at least 85% of whatever sentence is imposed, and the judge maintains full authority to exceed recommendations — including issuing the maximum penalty of 15 years in prison, three years of supervised release and a US$250,000 fine. His immigration status adds another layer of complexity: Squash entered the U.S. illegally in January 2021 after his visa was revoked, meaning deportation is almost certain once his sentence is complete. As the plea deal notes, “This conviction is a deportable offence.”

With sentencing day approaching, fans of the 6ix Boss remain anxious yet hopeful as they watch one of dancehall’s most polarising figures stand before the U.S. justice system. Kartel’s public show of support underscores the sense of solidarity, even as uncertainty hangs over Squash’s next chapter. All eyes are now on November 24, when the court’s decision will determine the road ahead for the Montego Bay native.
