Embattled Dancehall artiste Andrae “Squash” Whittaker has been sentenced to two years and three months in federal prison, closing a turbulent chapter that has kept fans on edge since his arrest earlier this year. The ruling was handed down on Monday, November 24, in a Miami courtroom, where the Montego Bay deejay pleaded guilty to possessing a firearm while living illegally in the United States — a charge that carries heavy immigration consequences as well.

According to federal documents, the Miami police stop that triggered the case unfolded in February, when officers recovered a Glock 19 from the vehicle Squash was travelling in. Prosecutors say the weapon was modified with a “switch,” the same mechanism Jamaicans commonly call a chip glock. The discovery led to his transfer to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), where he eventually entered a plea agreement admitting to the offence as an undocumented immigrant. His legal team pushed back against insinuations that he led any organised criminal enterprise, insisting the allegation was an unfounded narrative that gained traction during the investigation.

The sentencing comes just one day after a high-profile show of support from compatriot Vybz Kartel. Fresh from hurricane relief efforts, Kartel took to social media to rally behind Squash ahead of the hearing, telling fans: “Squash ago forward ah road man… dawg ago change him life a tell mi a tell yuh. God is the greatest… everybaddy can change.” The message quickly went viral, framing a moment of unity within the dancehall community despite the mounting legal pressure surrounding the 6ix Boss.

Squash — known for hits such as Big Breeze, Shub Out, and a core role in the 6ix movement — migrated from Jamaica several years ago but has lived in the U.S. without proper documentation since 2021. Now in federal custody, he is expected to serve at least 85% of his sentence before facing almost certain immigration action. His father, who is also in the United States, is reportedly being held by ICE as well.

With sentencing now complete, the focus shifts to what comes next for the embattled deejay — both legally and musically. Fans remain hopeful that, as Kartel suggested, Squash may use the moment to reset his path once he’s cleared to return home.
