“Running Scared”: Golding Accuses Andrew Holness-Led Government of Clinging to Power Until the Last Minute

With the date now set for Jamaica’s general election, People’s National Party (PNP) President Mark Golding wasted no time in painting the ruling Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) as a government on the ropes, accusing Prime Minister Andrew Holness of clinging to power until the “11th hour” out of fear of the people’s verdict.

Addressing party supporters in Portland shortly before Holness announced the September 3 poll, Golding declared, “Obviously they were running scared because no government leaves it to the 11th hour, and really the election called itself because they were out of time.”

Golding’s remarks signal the opposition’s readiness to mount an aggressive campaign, framing the JLP as a faltering administration that has overstayed its welcome. The PNP leader argued that the delayed election date reflected a lack of confidence in the government’s performance and public approval.

“We have been walking the length and breadth of Jamaica — the highways and byways, the hills and valleys — and everywhere we go, as a united party, the people say they are ready for change,” Golding told the gathering. “Our plans are solid, our plans are relevant, and we have the will and determination to execute them.”

The PNP’s campaign will focus heavily on bread-and-butter issues, from tackling the high cost of living to addressing crime, unemployment, and healthcare. Golding insists that his team has the credibility and policy strength to deliver “a better life for the people of Jamaica,” urging party workers to carry the message “far and wide” in the weeks ahead.

Nomination Day has been set for August 18, and the upcoming polls will coincide with by-elections in four Kingston and St Andrew divisions — Chancery Hall, Olympic Gardens, Seivwright Gardens, and Denham Town.

For Golding, the September 3 election represents more than just a contest for State power — it is, in his words, a moment for Jamaicans to send a clear message to a government he believes has lost touch with the people. Whether the electorate agrees with his assessment will be decided at the ballot box in less than a month.
