Legendary Jamaican musician Jimmy Cliff continues to cement his global legacy, recently earning his first-ever Silver certification in the United Kingdom for his 1993 cover of Johnny Nash’s classic hit “I Can See Clearly Now.” The British Phonographic Industry (B.P.I.) awarded the track the Brit Certified Silver Award on October 18, 2024, after it surpassed 200,000 sales in the U.K. Cliff’s rendition of the song, featured in the iconic Disney film Cool Runnings, revitalized the uplifting anthem, blending Nash’s optimism with the rhythmic flair of Jamaican music. “I Can See Clearly Now” reached No. 18 on the U.K. Singles Chart and has remained a fan favourite for its message of hope.
This achievement is just the latest in a career that spans more than five decades. In 2022, Cliff released his latest album, Refugees, a project rooted in humanitarian themes. The title track, which featured a collaboration with Haitian rap star Wyclef Jean, speaks to the plight of displaced individuals. Cliff described the song as “not just a song, but a movement,” reflecting his passion for freedom and social justice. The track received widespread attention across the diaspora, highlighting Cliff’s enduring relevance as a musician and advocate for change.
Also, in September 2022, Cliff was honoured alongside reggae luminaries like Lloyd “Judge Diamond” Ferguson and the late Frederick “Toots” Hibbert at the Jamaica Music Experience (J.A.M.E.) and True Tribute Awards in New York City.
