Montego Bay-based Dancehall artist Rygin King, born Matthew Smith, was recently arrested in New York on multiple weapons and ammunition possession charges. The 29-year-old artist, known for his popular tracks and resilient spirit, was detained by the NYPD’s 113th Precinct’ Midnight Public Safety Team‘ on Monday, July 8. He has since been arraigned and pleaded not guilty to the charges, which include criminal possession of a loaded firearm and ammunition clips, among other related offenses. His first court appearance is set for Friday, July 12, in the Queens Supreme Criminal Court, where court-appointed attorney Marc B. Laykind will represent him.
Rygin King’s arrest comes as a significant development in his tumultuous journey. In June 2020, the “Tuff“ deejay was one of multiple victims in a shooting incident in the Struie district of Westmoreland, Jamaica. The attack left his manager’s wife dead and King himself partially paralyzed after being shot three times. Despite his severe injuries, which now confine him to a wheelchair, King has remained optimistic and determined, refusing to accept a disabled status and expressing hope for walking again. His resilience has seen him gradually return to the music scene, inspiring many with his perseverance.
According to New York State court records, the charges against King are severe, carrying a statutory minimum sentence of three and a half years in prison and a maximum of 15 years, particularly for those with no prior criminal record. The specifics of his arrest remain unclear, but it is reported that King was in the company of other men who were also detained. This recent incident marks another chapter in the life of the dancehall star, who continues to navigate his career amidst personal and legal challenges.
