In a meaningful celebration of talent and perseverance, the St James Municipal Corporation has awarded Nigel’ Nigy Boy’ Hector the prestigious ‘2024 Silver Montego Bay Sumfest City Award‘ for his outstanding contributions to the field of entertainment. Often dubbed Jamaica’s Stevie Wonder, the visually impaired dancehall sensation has been lauded for his remarkable resilience and ability to triumph against the odds. Hector’s historic Sumfest performance, where he took the stage in a space suit, was nothing short of a groundbreaking moment for reggae music and the visually impaired community in Jamaica.
Hailing from Flankers, Montego Bay, Nigy Boy expressed immense pride and gratitude upon receiving the award. Reflecting on his journey, he said, “It is a privilege being here, and I like how everything come full circle, that my first ever performance was where I come from.“ His journey from an audience member at Reggae Sumfest to a performer is a testament to his hard work and dedication. Hector’s performance was not just a personal triumph but a significant cultural moment, highlighting the inclusivity and diversity within the Jamaican music scene.
Beyond his musical achievements, Nigy Boy is also a distinguished academic, holding double Bachelor of Arts degrees in political science and history with honours from Stony Brook University. The 23-year-old artist’s breakout single, “Continent,“ produced by Tarik “Rvssian“ Johnston, marked the beginning of his ascent to global stardom. His repertoire, including hits like “Judgement,” “Waterfalls“ featuring Mr. Vegas, “You And I,” “Lover Not A Fighter,“ and “Superwoman,“ has resonated with audiences worldwide. With performances spanning the United States, Guyana, St. Kitts, Bahamas, St. Lucia, Grenada, and Jamaica, Nigy Boy continues to inspire and captivate, solidifying his place in the annals of reggae history.”
