The 2024 edition of Reggae Sumfest at Catherine Hall lit up the Jamaican music scene with stellar performances and captivating audiences with its blend of iconic reggae, dancehall and R&B artists. The two-night event saw some of the genre’s biggest names take the stage, providing a musical experience that attendees will not soon forget.

Night One kicked off with a bang, featuring a stellar lineup and the highly anticipated performances of Aidonia, Lauryn Hill, Capleton, and Dexta Daps. Aidonia, one of dancehall’s most celebrated stars, delivered a standout set that proved to be the highlight of the night. His emotionally charged performance, complete with a custom light show, graphics, and a choir, resonated deeply with the audience. Aidonia’s ability to connect on a personal level, combined with his commanding stage presence and a well-curated mix of hits and newer tracks, earned him the title of best performer of the first night. His collaboration with Govana added an extra layer of excitement, further elevating the vibrant atmosphere. Dexta Daps had the ladies in a vice while Capleton kept the eternal fire blazing.

The surprise appearance of Lauryn Hill was another monumental moment of the evening. Hill, who was not initially billed to perform, took the stage to the delight of festival-goers. Her performance included solo hits like “Ex-Factor” and “Lost Ones,” along with Fugees classics such as “Killing Me Softly” and “Ready or Not.” A special collaboration with her son, YG Marley, added a heartfelt touch to her set. Despite some disappointment over the absence of artists like Jada Kingdom, Valiant, and Kraff, the night was deemed a success, bolstered by the commendable performances of Kaka High Flames, 450, Pablo YG, Turbulence, Teejay, and  Munga Honorable. Capleton also received the Red Stripe Living Legend Award.

Night Two continued the momentum with a diverse range of standout performances. From Nigy Boy’s high-energy set to Beres Hammond’s soulful delivery, the night had something for everyone. The American Grammy award-winning singer Babyface also graced the stage. However, his appearance came with its share of controversy. Fans of the free livestream were disappointed and humorously demanded refunds when it was announced that Babyface’s team did not permit any recordings of his performance to be shown. The decision led to critical comments from viewers, but did not dampen the overall success of the festival.

Reggae Sumfest 2024 showcased the enduring appeal and dynamic talent within the reggae and dancehall genres. From emotional and powerful performances to surprise appearances and memorable collaborations, the festival once again affirmed its status as a premier event in the Caribbean music calendar. As attendees left Catherine Hall, the echoes of unforgettable performances and the vibrant energy of the festival lingered, promising another year of musical excellence to come.
