Jamaica’s Minister of Health and Wellness, Dr. Christopher Tufton, is currently receiving treatment for a broken wrist sustained in a cycling accident on Sunday morning. The incident occurred on Charlemont Avenue in St. Andrew, where Dr. Tufton was reportedly struck by a motor vehicle driven by popular dancehall artiste, Valiant. At the time of the accident, Dr. Tufton was wearing a helmet, which likely mitigated further injuries.
In a joint Instagram post with Valiant, Dr. Tufton shared details of the incident and expressed his gratitude for the support he received. “Well, this Sunday wasn’t planned! Took a fall this morning on my bicycle. Counting myself very lucky because it could have been worse!! Thanks to God and to all who have me in their prayers and sent messages,” he wrote. He also extended his appreciation to Valiant for his immediate assistance and to the medical team at the University Hospital of the West Indies (UHWI), stating,
“Also, thanks to Valiant who was involved, for rushing me to UHWI, and to the team of Doctors and Nurses who are currently attending to me.”
This is not the first time Dr. Tufton has experienced a cycling mishap. Last year, he suffered minor injuries to his face, chin, and shoulder during an early morning ride in memory of cyclist Winston “Blacks” Brown. That incident, which occurred on the return from Port Royal, underscored Dr. Tufton’s commitment to cycling and his advocacy for safety measures, particularly the importance of wearing helmets.
Dr. Tufton, in his capacity as the Health and Wellness Minister, has been a beacon of advocacy for physical activity as a potent tool to combat non-communicable diseases. Despite the setbacks of these unfortunate accidents, he remains steadfast in his commitment, leading by example and promoting an active lifestyle while stressing the paramount importance of safety in all physical pursuits.
