Jamaican songstress Shenseea is bringing the curtains down on the year with two additional notable achievements, solidifying her status as a well-known figure in the music industry. First and foremost, she attained the title of the most streamed female dancehall artist on Spotify with over 4.1 million monthly listeners, a testament to her widespread appeal and growing international recognition. Her involvement in two major movie soundtracks in 2023 further underscored this recognition.
Earlier this year, Shenseea revealed she had secured a feature on the Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse soundtrack. She can be heard on the single “Infamous (Spider-Verse remix)” alongside Myke Towers, a distinctive collaboration showcased on the deluxe version of the soundtrack. Expanding her cinematic repertoire, Shenseea joins forces with American actress and singer Fantasia Barrino for the soundtrack of the upcoming musical film The Color Purple. This musical adaptation, a reimagining of the original novel, delves into the harsh realities of Celie’s abusive life and marriage, set for release on Christmas Day (December 25.)
Shenseea’s artistic versatility shines through in her latest venture, where she collaborates with Fantasia on the single “Hell No! (Missy Elliott Remix),” featured on The Color Purple (Music From and Inspired By) soundtrack. The track, incorporating a sample from Jamaican artiste Dawn Penn’s “You Don’t Love Me (No, No, No),” aligns with the movie’s theme, highlighting the struggles of women in a male-dominated era. Shenseea’s empowering lyrics in the third verse underscore themes of resilience and solidarity among women, showcasing her ability to infuse different genres into her music.
