I-Octane Claims Over 522 Hit Songs, Defends His Hitmaking Legacy Amid Feud with Malie Donn

I-Octane, currently engaged in a public feud with emerging dancehall artist Malie Donn, recently made bold claims about his career achievements via Instagram.

Responding to critics who suggested he needed a hit song and should desist from tormenting the dancehall upstart, I-Octane, whose given name is Byiome Muir, posed several questions to his naysayers, asking if they would tell established artists like Vybz Kartel, Beres Hammond, or Mavado that they needed more hits. He asserted that he has recorded over 6,000 songs, with more than 500 of them being hits.

“Ooonu think oonu can tell Vado seh him need one more hit song? Oonu can tell Kartel dat? Oonu can tell Beres? Oonu can tell dat, a 6000 recorded songs mi have, and 500 and add hit songs, 522 hit songs enuh almost close as the amount a people up yahso enuh [alluding to the viewership of his Instagram Live feed].” He declared.

The artist also emphasised his consistent presence in the music industry with annual shows. These claims, if true, would position him as Jamaica’s greatest hitmaker, surpassing iconic figures like Bob Marley, Beenie Man, Bounty Killer, Sizzla Kalonji, Sean Paul, and Vybz Kartel, among others.

Incarcerated dancehall star Vybz Kartel, whom many consider to be the greatest domestic hitmaker of the genre based on his insane work ethic, emerged on the scene in 2001. Let’s create a scenario in which he got 20 hit songs annually that would result in 440 hits over his 22-year career. However, this would still be 82 hits less than I-Octane’s claims.

However, analysing I-Octane’s assertions raises questions about what constitutes a “hit song.” In the music industry, a hit song typically achieves high chart rankings, significant sales (both physical and digital), and substantial streaming numbers on platforms like Spotify and YouTube. Radio airplay is also crucial, as it can significantly expand a song’s reach.

Moreover, a true hit song transcends quantitative measures. It makes a cultural impact, becoming part of popular culture through references in various media. Ultimately, a hit song resonates deeply with a broad and diverse audience, creating a lasting connection and eliciting enjoyment.

While I-Octane claims an impressive number of hits, the true impact and reach of these songs remain a subject of debate.
