Afrobeats superstar Burna Boy, known for his global acclaim and affinity for Jamaican culture, has made a surprising musical reference in the 2023 release of Netflix’s action thriller, ‘The Black Book.’
In a pivotal scene from the 2-hour 4-minute-long flix with a young boy that unfolds amidst the vibrant streets of Lagos, Nigeria, the soundtrack features “Violation,” a track from 2017 by Jesse Jagz featuring Burna Boy can be heard blaring in the background. However, what’s intriguing is that the lyrics sung by Burna Boy in this song are remarkably similar to those from Aidonia’s 2009 hit, “Badman A Step,” featured on the Beast Riddim.
Upon being alerted of this revelation, Aidonia’s team, confirmed by Prism Marketing Consultants, is actively investigating the matter. They also took the opportunity to express respect for Burna Boy’s music and his professed love for Jamaica. In a statement from the 4th Genna camp, a representative acknowledged this unique connection, stating,
“Burna Boy has always professed his love for Jamaica publicly, but it’s even greater to know that he is a fan of Aidonia’s music. We are aware of the insert in the film and are presently looking into the situation.”
“The Black Book” has achieved a historic milestone by securing the top spot on Netflix worldwide, making it the first Nigerian film to do so. Within a mere week of its release, it soared to number one in 12 countries, including Nigeria, Kenya, Poland, Jamaica, and even the Bahamas. This remarkable accomplishment underscores not only the film’s global appeal but also its ability to resonate with diverse audiences across various cultures.
At the heart of “The Black Book” lies a compelling narrative centred around Paul Edima, portrayed by Nollywood icon Richard Mofe Damijo (RMD). When Paul’s only son falls victim to a gang of corrupt policemen, he is thrust back into his military past in pursuit of justice. The film explores profound themes of redemption, justice, and the enduring impact of one’s past, making it an essential viewing experience for enthusiasts of gripping cinematic storytelling.
