Dancehall icon Sean Paul is mourning the passing of his beloved grandmother, Georgina K. Harrison, whose death at age 101 brings to a close a life that spanned decades, continents, and some of the most defining moments in modern history. The Grammy-winning superstar confirmed the news on Wednesday, January 28, sharing an emotional tribute that highlighted the profound impact the family matriarch had on his life and worldview.

The 53-year-old artiste took to Instagram to reflect on her extraordinary journey, writing, “We are devastated. You’ve seen so much change in our world.” Born in 1924, Harrison lived through World War II, multiple pandemics, and sweeping technological shifts, witnessing society evolve from silent films and live big band music to smartphones and the digital age. Sean Paul described her as a woman of wit, wisdom, and quiet strength whose humour, poetry, and life lessons shaped generations of their family.

Born in Coventry, England, Harrison’s resilience was forged early. In a 2021 interview with The Guardian, Sean Paul recounted her harrowing wartime experience, revealing that after the Coventry Blitz, she emerged from an air-raid shelter to find her home was one of only three still standing in the area. At just 14, she was already contributing to the British war effort, drawing aircraft parts, a chapter that would later lead to a life-changing romance with a Chinese-Jamaican student studying in England.

In 1948, at age 24, Harrison made the bold decision to relocate to Jamaica, where she would spend most of her life and raise her family. Despite fully embracing Caribbean life, she maintained a deep connection to her English roots, often cooking traditional British dishes like bubble and squeak while sharing stories of fish and chips wrapped in newspaper. Her passing not only marks the end of a remarkable personal journey but also leaves behind a legacy that continues to shape Sean Paul’s identity, artistry, and appreciation for cultural heritage—one that will echo long after her century-long story has ended.
