After facing intense criticism from the public, including several vocal individuals in the entertainment and media fraternity, the Prime Minister of Jamaica, the Most Hon. Andrew Holness, has announced that accountability measures will be implemented for ministers and members of parliament (MPs).
Mr. Holness made the announcement while handing over a two-bedroom house under the New Social Housing Programme (NSHP) in Riversdale, St. Catherine. He assured the public that the political directorate will be held accountable for their new salaries, and a series of measures will be announced momentarily.
“We have established, and I will announce shortly, a series of accountability measures, and I have said to my MPs and the ministers that the cost of this policy is accountability. Every single MP, all ministers are now committed to ensuring that they earn the salary,” he declared.
Given the recent salary adjustments under the compensation review, the Prime Minister emphasized the importance of accountability and performance standards. He also stated that a performance-based compensation system would be implemented for the public service, including the executive and the legislature. The MPs have been urged to prove to the Jamaican people that their new salaries are justified, and they understand that accountability is a top priority.
The Prime Minister, who has been an elected representative for more than 25 years, expressed his commitment to giving to worthy causes and will continue to do so.
